Unbounded Sounds
Unbounded Sounds is a music series created by the kanun virtuoso, improviser and composer Sofia Labropoulou. Debuting in 2025 at the Sargfabrik Kulturhaus, this series invites audiences to experience a unique blend of folk traditions, contemporary innovation, and Vienna’s rich music diversity.
The inaugural edition features a series of five unique concerts, each showcasing a two-part format. In the first part, Sofia Labropoulou collaborates with an internationally acclaimed artist in a duet, exploring musical influences from folk, jazz, experimental, and improvised music traditions. In the second part, a local artist from Vienna joins to form a trio, creating space for dialogue and unexpected musical connections.
The series also features artist-led workshops, at mica – music austria Seminarraum, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process. These sessions aim to inspire musicians and listeners by bridging cultures and music genres in meaningful ways.
Unbounded Sounds celebrates Vienna as a meeting point for artistic collaboration. By bringing together global musicians and local talent, the series offers fresh perspectives on musical traditions while embracing innovation.
Held at the Sargfabrik Kulturhaus (concerts), and mica – music austria Seminarraum (workshops) this series is set to inspire both long-time music lovers and curious newcomers.

Sofia Labropoulou
Sofia Labropoulou is an internationally acclaimed kanun player, composer, and improviser, renowned for her innovative approach to the instrument. Blending Eastern Mediterranean folk music, Ottoman classical traditions, Western medieval, contemporary, and experimental music, she crafts a sound that is both deeply personal and globally resonant.
She has collaborated with leading artists across genres, performed on prestigious stages worldwide, and led masterclasses in kanun and Greek folk music. Her solo album Sisyphus (Odradek Records, 2020) showcased her unique ability to intertwine tradition and innovation, while her upcoming album Spiral continues to push the kanun beyond its sonic boundaries.
As the founder and artistic director of Unbounded Sounds, Sofia brings her vision of cross-cultural collaboration and artistic dialogue to life. The festival reflects her belief in the transformative power of music to connect people and traditions while expanding the possibilities of artistic expression.
